John Howard Dethman

John Howard Dethman, 46, a resident of The Dalles, died at Mid-Columbia Medical Center on Thursday, May 12, 1994 of throat cancer.  John was born December 22, 1947 at The Dalles, the youngest of four children to Vernon H. and Esther Ruby (Cushing) Dethman.  He grew up in The Dalles, attended St. Mary's Academy and graduated from TDHS in 1966.  He served in the US Navy and then returned to The Dalles to work as a maintenance carpenter.  John was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and he enjoyed gardening, wood carving and the outdoors, including fishing.  John is survived by four children; Kelly Dethman Edwards of Oklahoma; Amy and Jeremy Dethman of Mt. Vernon, WA; and John Michael Dethman of The Dalles; a grandson, Dylan Dethman; his mother Esther R. Dethman of The Dalles; brother Kenneth Dethman of Portland; sister, Leah Hansen of The Dalles; aunts and uncles, including Cecilia and Lillian Cushing of The Dalles and Elaine Somerville of Napa CA and Larry Cushing of Grants Pass.   Preceded in death by his brother Michael Dethman in May 1965.  Viewing visitation will be Sunday, May 15 from 2 to 5 pm and Monday, 8 to 10 am at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home.  Recitation of Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, May 16 at 11 am at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Keibel as celebrant.  Interment will follow at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, sent in care of Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home, 1100 Kelly Ave., The Dalles, OR 97058.
